A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a battery of functional tests designed to identify limitations and to determine a person’s safe functional abilities for return to work. At The Strength Center, a WorkWell certified, doctorate-level physical therapist will perform all FCE testing. Workwell’s FCE adheres to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) FCE recommended practice guidelines.
The FCE is used to assist employers, physicians, insurance companies, attorneys and case managers to determine safe, functional levels for an individual to either return to work or to establish functional ability. The evaluation assists referral sources by offering information for settlement of claims in short/long-term disability, provides return-to-work capabilities and determines ability levels for liability cases.
The components of the FCE will vary based on the purpose of the assessment. The FCE begins with a client interview, medical record review and musculoskeletal screening. Functional testing may include activities such as lifting/carrying, pushing, pulling, positional tolerance activities, reaching, stooping and bending. Pain monitoring is performed during the FCE to document client-reported levels of pain during various activities.
FINAL REPORTS ARE GENERALLY AVAILABLE WITHIN 48 HOURS OF COMPLETION OF TESTING.
