What is your “core” and why does strengthening it matter?
The core is the group of muscles around your midsection that controls and stabilizes your body. These muscles also protect the spine from injury. The stronger the core, the lower the risk of low back pain.
Which muscles make up your core?
- Abdominals and obliques
- Quadratus lumborum
- Lumbar paraspinals
- Latissimus dorsi (lats)
- Thoracolumbar fascia
Don’t let those big names scare you, your physical therapist can teach you exercises that strengthen those muscles and keep your spine aligned – preventing low back pain.
